The Mintz Toronto office opened in May 2023 to support Canada’s growing life sciences, private equity, intellectual property, mergers and acquisitions, technology, and energy sectors. Located at 200 Bay Street, the office provides unique cross-border legal insights and resources to clients doing business in Canada and the US. Our lawyers are actively involved in civic and community activities, driving regional economics across Canada, and seamlessly integrating with our US operations.
Job Summary:
The Accounting Coordinator will be responsible for effectively establishing and coordinating processes and efficiencies for the accounting department in the Toronto office.
Responsibilities:
- Interpret LSO rules for trust accounting and record keeping, and conduct accounting processes in accordance with the rules and internal policies and procedures
- Assist with monthly reporting process, including preparing journal entries, bank and other reconciliations, accruals, expense analysis, and reallocations
- Prepare trust transactions, bank transfers, and monthly trust reconciliation report
- Support cash management functions
- Assist with government remittances and reconciliations
- Respond to requests from lawyers and staff, including uploading journal entries for disbursements and preparing reports, and solving accounting issues
- Document and recommend workflow improvements (e.g., internal controls, process efficiencies, systems improvements)
- Collaborate and participate in projects and initiatives or ad-hoc analysis, including implementation of new processes and systems
- Participate in training sessions and process improvements
- Perform administrative duties (e.g., document management, emails, copying)
- Assist with the LSO audit and audit preparations
- Respond promptly and professionally to internal and external inquiries
- Provide support to other accounting team members as needed
Qualifications:
- Degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, is preferred
- CPA or pursuing CPA, is considered an asset
- 5+ years of experience as an Accounting Coordinator, preferably in a law firm or another professional services organization.
- Strong knowledge and comprehension of LSO Rules
- Fully proficient in Elite 3E.
- Strong financial analysis skills, including high level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Strong technical skills with the aptitude to learn new software quickly
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Client-service oriented and a team player with the ability to take initiative and work independently at the highest level with minimal supervision.
- Ability to multi-task and carry a large workload in a time-sensitive, fast-paced environment.
- Enthusiastic, proactive, and positive attitude.
- Ability to handle confidential matters with discretion.
- Must be self-motivated to produce quality work.
