Law firms are investing heavily in AI, accelerating their move to the cloud and strengthening their cybersecurity strategies. But behind each of these priorities sits a common challenge: information.

The 2026 ILTA Technology Survey, representing more than 500 firms across 12 countries and around 140,000 lawyers, paints a clear picture of an industry undergoing rapid technology change.

94% of firms are now using or exploring generative AI, and GenAI has entered the list of firms' biggest security challenges for the first time — immediately ranking second, behind user behaviour.

At the same time, firms continue to manage growing volumes of information spread across document management systems, email, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, cloud platforms, physical records and other repositories. Cloud adoption continues to increase, while information governance, security, retention, classification and control remain significant concerns.

In this session, Chris Hockey, Senior Manager, Information Governance at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, will examine what the ILTA Technology Survey tells us about the changing information landscape within law firms and why information governance is becoming increasingly important to the work of CIOs, technology leaders, security teams and those responsible for AI strategy.

Rather than treating information governance simply as records management or compliance, Chris will explore its role as the foundation for some of the industry's biggest technology priorities: understanding what information the firm holds, reducing unnecessary data, protecting sensitive information, controlling access, supporting cyber resilience and creating a trusted information foundation for AI.
