Manager, Paraprofessional Services

Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, one of Canada’s largest law firms, is seeking three Managers, Paraprofessional ServicesLocation of the role will be in one of the Firm’s 5 offices: Calgary, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto or Vancouver.

Purpose of Role

The Manager, Paraprofessional Services provides national service line management of the Firm’s Law Clerk and Paralegal services including career management, capacity management, performance and compensation management, and talent development.

The primary purpose of the role is to perform management and administrative duties relating to the effective supervision of the Law Clerks and Paralegals.

Reporting to the National Director, Paraprofessional Services, the role is also responsible for the implementing of new technology, programs, policies and procedures to promote consistent Law Clerk and Paralegal practices and to identify areas for efficiencies and increased productivity.

We are seeking three Managers, Paraprofessional Services to support and manage in the following practice areas:

  • Corporate Services
  • Business Law
  • Litigation Law

Key Responsibilities

Guidance and governance:

  • Represent a national firm identity within the regional paraprofessional community by hosting regular meetings of practice groups, regions and national teams for consistent communication of strategy, best practices, change management as well as delivering feedback up to the practice group and management.
  • Assist with marketing and promotion of Law Clerk/Paralegal services within the Firm across regions and services.
  • Collaborate with Regional Group Managers, National Practice Group Leaders and subject matter experts to deliver process improvements and precedents for efficiency gain and to address service gaps.
  • Provide timely and consistent management overview and oversight of training needs, performance management, productivity management, performance evaluations, salary recommendations and alignment with leadership.
  • Ongoing analysis and change management regarding billable hour targets, work process improvements, work share and work flow within the practice group, regionally and nationally, assess administrative support and technology requirements.
  • Identify, recommend and promote innovative practice specific technology and electronic/online systems.
  • Administer implementation of new technology and updates including monitoring all testing and working with vendors to resolve issues and customize product.

Operational Excellence:

  • Participate in the development of national Law Clerk/Paralegal competencies and specialities.
  • Coordinate performance management process in collaboration with the talent professionals, supervisors and supervising lawyers.
  • Participate in the national compensation review process by coordinating and providing feedback and market knowledge.
  • Provide engagement and direction to the paraprofessional group related to career path, assist in identifying and providing opportunities for growth and development, and assessing succession needs.
  • Practice area skill assessment and workflow coverage solutions, working within teams and in collaboration with leadership and talent managers regarding alternate working structures, turnover and retention.

Talent Development:

  • Participate in the recruitment process of Law Clerks/Paralegals including interviews and testing where applicable to ensure engagement of the best talent.
  • Evaluate and promote appropriate external and internal CLE opportunities according to need and national policies.
  • Deliver regional and/or practice group specific Law Clerk/Paralegal professional development programs and best practices.
  • Coordinate Paraprofessional and practice group specific on-boarding and integration for growing strong teams and developing specialties.
  • Identify and coordinate cross-training and skill development opportunities.
  • Maintain professional presence and remain informed regarding marketplace competition and regulatory compliance with provincial governing bodies.
  • Formalize a mentorship program for the paraprofessional group and develop leaders.

Key Competencies Required

  • University Degree and / or College Law Clerk or Paralegal Diploma / Certificate (or equivalent).
  • Have a minimum of 10 years of experience as a Law Clerk or Paralegal in a legal environment.
  • Excellent understanding of the role of the Law Clerk / Paralegal, with technical expertise in at least one practice area.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience and skills training required.
  • Strong managerial presence, able to work with Senior Management of the Firm; a naturally confident leader and strategic thinker.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Bilingualism may be required dependent on the region.
  • Superior organizational, data management and problem solving skills.
  • Proven project and time management skills and ability to manage a variety of concurrent projects.
  • Advanced computer skills, particularly with Windows-based computer systems including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Adobe.
  • A strong work ethic and commitment to excellence.
  • The incumbent will be required to travel to other BLG offices.
